Summary of the article

Webflow credits are monetary amounts added to your Workspace balance whenever you downgrade a plan, switch from yearly to monthly billing, or receive a billing adjustment from Support. Credits are calculated based on the unused days of your current plan at the price difference between old and new tiers. They're automatically applied to your next invoice(s) until the balance reaches zero — you don't need to do anything manually. Credits never expire and are tied to the specific Workspace where they were issued. They can't be transferred between Workspaces, used for template purchases, or (in most cases) refunded as cash. When you upgrade, the reverse applies — Webflow charges a prorated fee for the remaining days at the higher plan price.

When you upgrade or downgrade a Webflow plan mid-cycle, Webflow uses a system of credits and proration to make sure you only pay for what you use. Instead of waiting until the end of your billing period, Webflow calculates the difference immediately and applies it to your next invoice as a charge or credit.

1. What are Webflow credits?

Webflow credits are monetary amounts added to your Workspace balance that can be used to offset future charges.

You receive credits when:

  • You downgrade a Workspace or Site plan mid-cycle (Webflow refunds the unused portion of the higher-priced plan).
  • You switch from yearly to monthly billing (Webflow credits the unused months of your annual plan).
  • You cancel a paid add-on mid-cycle (Webflow may credit the unused portion, depending on the add-on).
  • Webflow issues a billing adjustment or refund due to an error or special circumstance (e.g. grace period discount, Support-issued credit).

Credits appear in your Workspace balance and are automatically applied to your next invoice(s) until they're fully used.

2. How credits are calculated when you downgrade

When you downgrade a plan, Webflow calculates how much of your current billing cycle is unused and issues a credit for that portion based on the price difference.

Example: Downgrading a Workspace plan

  • You're on Growth Workspace at $35/month.
  • Halfway through the month (15 days left), you downgrade to Core Workspace at $28/month.
  • Price difference: $35 - $28 = $7/month = ~$0.23/day.
  • Days remaining: 15 days.
  • Credit issued: $0.23/day × 15 days = $3.45.

The $3.45 credit is added to your Workspace balance and will reduce your next invoice by that amount.

Example: Downgrading a Site plan

  • You're on Business Site plan at $49/month.
  • With 10 days left in the cycle, you downgrade to CMS Site plan at $29/month.
  • Price difference: $49 - $29 = $20/month = ~$0.67/day.
  • Days remaining: 10 days.
  • Credit issued: $0.67/day × 10 days = $6.70.

The $6.70 credit offsets your next Site plan renewal.

3. How credits are applied to future invoices

Credits in your Workspace balance are automatically applied to your next invoice(s) until the balance reaches zero.

How it works:

  1. Your next billing date arrives (Workspace plan, Site plan, add-on, etc.).
  2. Webflow calculates the total charge (e.g. $64 for Workspace + Site plan).
  3. Webflow checks your Workspace credit balance (e.g. $10 in credits).
  4. Webflow subtracts the credit from the total: $64 - $10 = $54 charged to your card.
  5. Your credit balance drops to $0.

If your credit is larger than your next invoice, the remaining credit carries over to the invoice after that.

Example:

  • You have a $50 credit in your Workspace balance.
  • Your next Workspace plan renewal is $35.
  • Webflow charges you $0 (credit covers it fully).
  • Remaining credit: $15, which offsets part of your next invoice.

4. How charges work when you upgrade

When you upgrade a plan mid-cycle, Webflow calculates the prorated cost of the upgrade for the remaining days and charges you immediately on your next invoice.

Example: Upgrading a Workspace plan

  • You're on Core Workspace at $28/month.
  • Halfway through the month (15 days left), you upgrade to Growth Workspace at $35/month.
  • Price difference: $35 - $28 = $7/month = ~$0.23/day.
  • Days remaining: 15 days.
  • Prorated charge: $0.23/day × 15 days = $3.45.

On your next invoice, you'll see a line item:

  • "Proration for Workspace upgrade: $3.45"

Starting the next full billing cycle, you'll pay the full $35/month.

Example: Upgrading a Site plan

  • You're on Basic Site plan at $14/month.
  • With 20 days left, you upgrade to CMS Site plan at $29/month.
  • Price difference: $29 - $14 = $15/month = ~$0.50/day.
  • Days remaining: 20 days.
  • Prorated charge: $0.50/day × 20 days = $10.

Your next invoice includes a $10 upgrade charge for the remaining 20 days, then you pay the full $29/month going forward.

5. How credits work when switching from yearly to monthly billing

When you switch from an annual plan to monthly billing mid-year, Webflow calculates the unused portion of your annual payment and issues a large credit.

Example:

  • You paid $252/year for Core Workspace (annual discount applied).
  • After 6 months, you switch to monthly billing at $28/month.
  • You've used 6 months of your annual plan = ~$126 worth.
  • Unused portion: $252 - $126 = $126 credit.

Webflow adds $126 to your Workspace balance, then:

  1. Charges you $28 for the first monthly cycle.
  2. The $126 credit offsets the next 4+ months of $28 charges before you start paying out of pocket again.

This is why switching from yearly to monthly often results in several months of "free" billing before you see a new charge on your card.

6. Where to see your Workspace credit balance

To check if you have any credits available:

  1. Go to Workspace settings → Billing.
  2. Look for a section labeled "Workspace balance", "Credits", or "Account balance" near the top of the page.
  3. You'll see the current credit amount (e.g. "$15.00 available").

If you don't see a balance section, it means you have $0 in credits.

You can also check your latest invoice in All invoices to see if any credits were applied as line items (e.g. "Credit applied: -$10.00").

7. How to use credits strategically

When downgrading:

  • Time your downgrade early in the billing cycle (e.g. right after renewal) to maximize the credit you receive for unused days.
  • Use the credit to offset future bills or to test a different plan without paying full price.

When upgrading:

  • Upgrade late in the billing cycle (e.g. 5 days before renewal) to minimize the prorated charge—you'll only pay a few days' difference, then the full price kicks in next cycle.

When switching to monthly from yearly:

  • If you have a large credit from switching, consider using those "free" months to test a higher-tier plan without additional cost.

When cancelling:

  • Webflow does not automatically refund credits when you cancel all plans. Credits remain in your Workspace balance indefinitely and can be used if you reactivate a plan later.
  • If you want to cash out unused credits, you'll need to contact Webflow Support and request a refund (not guaranteed—see section 9).

8. Do credits expire?

No—Webflow credits do not expire.

  • Credits remain in your Workspace balance indefinitely, even if you:
    • Cancel all plans and downgrade to free Starter.
    • Don't log in for months.
    • Switch Workspaces (credits are tied to the specific Workspace, not your account globally).

However, credits are non-transferable:

  • You can't move credits from one Workspace to another.
  • You can't transfer credits to a different Webflow account.
  • You can't use credits to pay for template purchases (only for subscriptions).

9. Can you get a cash refund for credits?

Generally, no—Webflow credits are designed to offset future subscription charges, not to be refunded as cash.

Exceptions where Webflow may issue a cash refund:

  • You're closing your Workspace permanently and have a large unused credit balance (e.g. $100+).
  • The credit was issued due to a billing error and you prefer a cash refund instead.
  • You're leaving Webflow and can prove you won't use the service again.

To request a cash refund of your credit balance:

  1. Contact Webflow Support via the Help menu.
  2. Provide your Workspace name, credit balance, and reason for the refund request.
  3. Explain why you can't use the credits (e.g. permanently closing the business, migrating off Webflow).

Webflow reviews these requests case-by-case and may approve or deny based on your history and circumstances.

Important: if you request a chargeback or dispute charges with your bank, Webflow will likely forfeit any credit balance and suspend your account.

10. Common issues with credits and proration

Issue 1: "I downgraded but I don't see a credit"

  • Check Workspace settings → Billing for your credit balance.
  • If you downgraded with only 1–2 days left in your cycle, the credit may be very small (e.g. $0.50) and easy to miss.
  • If you downgraded after your renewal date, the credit applies to the next cycle, not the one that just renewed.

Issue 2: "I was charged for an upgrade I didn't make"

  • Check if another admin or team member with billing permissions upgraded the plan.
  • Look at Workspace settings → Members to see who has admin access.
  • Contact Webflow Support if you believe the charge was unauthorized.

Issue 3: "My credit isn't being applied to my invoices"

  • Credits are applied automatically—you don't need to do anything.
  • If your invoice shows the full amount without the credit subtracted, contact Webflow Support with your invoice number and credit balance screenshot.

Issue 4: "I have a credit but I want to cancel—will I lose it?"

  • Credits remain in your Workspace even after you cancel all paid plans.
  • If you reactivate a plan later, the credit will still be there and will be applied.
  • If you want to cash out the credit before cancelling, see section 9 above.

11. How credits work with Client Payments

If you use Client Payments (where clients pay for their own Site plans):

  • Credits issued to your Workspace (from your own plan changes) do not apply to Client Payment invoices—clients are billed separately.
  • Credits issued to the client (if they downgrade their Site plan) appear on their next Client Payment invoice, not yours.

Keep client billing and your own Workspace billing separate when tracking credits.
