Definition
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, emerged with Google's featured snippets and voice search: the goal is no longer just to appear in a list of links, but to be the displayed answer. With the rise of generative AI, the term has expanded and now largely overlaps with GEO.
How it works
An answer engine looks for a short, self-contained, and reliable passage that addresses a specific question. AEO therefore focuses on format: a clear question as a heading, a direct answer in the first sentence, lists or tables when useful, and structured data (FAQ, HowTo) that helps the engine identify the answer.
Why it matters for your site
A displayed answer reduces clicks to websites. According to an Ahrefs study, the click-through rate of the first result drops by 34.5% when an AI Overview is displayed (Ahrefs, April 2025). Being the source of the answer is becoming more important than being first in the list.
The We-R perspective
AEO is primarily a discipline of writing. Every service page and article we produce begins with a direct answer, then expands. This is useful for Google, for AIs, and for the busy reader.

Have questions?
Transparency for informed decision-making.
Almost. AEO targets all answer engines, GEO targets generative engines. The techniques overlap: direct answers, structured and sourced content.
On pages that answer your clients' real questions, yes. An FAQ invented to place keywords adds nothing, for readers or engines.
No, but it helps engines understand that a passage is a question and its answer. It must match the visible text on the page exactly.
