AI Mode

+ Definition

AI Mode is a Google search mode where the results page is entirely replaced by a conversational answer generated by AI, with links to sources and the option to ask follow-up questions.

Definition

Google introduced AI Mode in May 2025 (Google I/O 2025), initially in the United States. Unlike AI Overview, which appears above traditional search results, AI Mode is a separate tab: users converse with the engine, much like ChatGPT, and links are integrated as references within the response.

‍

How it works

AI Mode breaks down complex questions into multiple sub-searches, then synthesizes an answer from numerous sources. A page may therefore be cited for a specific sub-aspect of a question, even if it does not rank for the query as a whole.

‍

Why it matters for your site

Queries in AI Mode are longer and more specific than traditional keywords. Sites that clearly answer precise questions, using dedicated pages and concrete data, are more likely to be featured.

‍

The We-R perspective

AI Mode reinforces our existing recommendations: pages that each address a specific intent, a glossary and wiki for practical questions, and a brand presence that extends beyond your own website.
