Brand book

+ Definition

A brand book is a brand's reference document. It brings together its platform (who it is, what it promises), visual identity, verbal identity and the rules to apply them, so every team speaks and shows the brand the same way.

Definition

A brand book is a comprehensive guide to a brand. While a style guide only covers visuals, a brand book also covers substance and voice.

‍

How it works

It generally begins with the brand platform (mission, vision, values, promise, positioning), then presents the visual identity and its rules, and finally the verbal identity: tone, vocabulary to prioritize or avoid, and messaging examples.

It is intended for everyone who speaks on behalf of the brand: marketing, sales, recruitment, agencies, and freelancers.

‍

Why it matters for your site

A brand book saves you from having to re-explain the brand to every new employee or service provider. It also makes the brand easier for the AI tools teams use for writing to adopt: a tone described with examples is much easier to replicate than an assumed one.

‍

The We-R perspective

It is the final deliverable of our branding projects, followed by the website. A brand book is only valuable if it is used, so we write it with concrete examples ("write this, not that") rather than abstract principles.
