Definition
The llms.txt format was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) on the llmstxt.org website. It is an open convention rather than an official standard: a Markdown file that summarizes who you are and lists your reference pages, so that a language model doesn't have to guess from HTML pages cluttered with menus and scripts.
How it works
The file begins with a title and a short summary, followed by a list of annotated links grouped by section (services, resources, case studies). Some sites include citation guidelines or a reminder of their published pricing. The file is updated whenever a new, important page is added.
Why it matters for your site
The llms.txt file gives you control over how your site is summarized: your services, your published prices, and the pages you want cited. It is inexpensive to implement. However, no major AI player (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic) has confirmed that they use it to select their sources, and tests like the one from SeoMix show that AI crawlers rarely consult it.
The We-R perspective
We implement it on all our sites, knowing that it is not a magic bullet. It complements a well-structured site; it does not replace one. Webflow now allows you to add it directly within the site settings.

No, not directly. It serves language models and the tools that read it, not Google rankings.
robots.txt tells bots what they can crawl. llms.txt presents what matters on your website. The two are complementary.
